Every autumn, when it starts getting cool, I dig in to my massive felted wool sweater collection and let the colors and textures inspire me. This year I was inspired to embroider snowflakes (like I already showed with my DIY felted wool sweater stocking with snowflake embroidery). Today’s tutorial is a quick project using up scraps of felted sweater: snowflake embroidered felt Christmas ornaments!

Hand sew these beautiful snowflake embroidered felt Christmas ornaments for your tree or to decorate your home during the holidays. These are easy to create with a free embroidery pattern for three different designs, and require only three basic embroidery stitches. What a perfect handmade Christmas gift! #diyornament #embroideredornament

My free snowflake embroidery pattern (see below to download it) has three designs that are perfect for beginners. Stitch them on to the felted sweater (or regular felt or other fabric) and sew the two sides together. You can stuff them slightly, if you’d like, and then hang them up!

I made these as handmade Christmas tree ornaments, however you can also hang them elsewhere or leave off the hanger, string them together and hang them as a fun garland!

Embroider the snowflakes

1. Felt one (or more) 100% wool sweater. This is a great way to use old and ruined sweaters that you no longer use. Or you can buy them cheap at a thrift shop. Here’s how to felt wool sweaters in the washing machine.

Cut the snowflake embroidery pattern printed on Stick n Stitch.

Stick ‘n Stitch* makes it incredibly easy to transfer embroidery designs. Print out the embroidery pattern onto the fabric side of a sheet of Stick ‘n Stitch and cut out the part of the design you want using regular, not fabric, scissors.

I suggest embroidering two of each snowflake so that each ornament can have the same snowflake embroidered on each side.

2. Cut off one sleeve of the sweater or use other scraps that are big enough for the glass to fit on, with some extra space around it. (top) Iron the fabric.

3. Remove the backing of the printed and cut Stick ‘n Stitch*, and stick the printed design on to the right side of the fabric. (bottom)

4. Embroider the snowflakes. The three designs are beginner friendly. All you need to sew are straight stitches and French knots. If you want to be taken through the steps of embroidering these snowflakes, please read my blog post on how to embroider snowflakes. 5. Peel up an edge of the Stick ‘n Stitch* and cut it off, being very careful not to cut into the thread or fabric. Use your regular scissors so you don’t gunk up your fabric scissors.

11. Put two snowflake pieces together, wrong sides facing, making sure that the tips are pointing in the same direction on both sides. Then trim any uneven bits. (not shown)

12. Knot the embroidery thread and push the needle through one layer at the top so that the knot stays hidden between the layers. (A)

13. Bring the needle over the edge and to the back. Stick the needle in so that it comes back out in the front in the same point as A. (B)

14. Slip the needle under the loop at the top. (C)

15. Push the needle through the layers, from the back to the front, to the right of the previous stitch. Make sure that the needle comes out the same distance from the fabric edge as in the first stitch. (D)

17. Now pull the thread tight. You’ll see the blanket stitch is formed right at the fabric edge. (F)

18. Repeat steps 15-17 to create another blanket stitch to the right. Make sure that there is always the same distance from the fabric edge and between each stitch. (G)

19. Continue making blanket stitches around. If you want to stuff the ornament, stop when there is a little opening left (H), stuff it, and continue sewing the circle shut.

  1. These are so sweet, I have a bag of old jumpers and cardigans that I’ve felted, this will be perfect for using the small scraps – waste not want not! Now I wonder if I have any red felted jumpers anywhere…..(I love the red and white together!)

    • Haha! Careful what you wish for! Every so often I obsess over a different repurposed material and fill up my sewing room with it. I now have mountains of sweaters, button down shirts, umbrellas, t-shirts, sheets, and so on. There’s barely space left to actually sew with any of it!

  2. Your decorations are beautiful and I love how much detail you show in the photos. I’ll be trying stick n stitch now instead of guessing with my embroidery!

  3. Bellissime queste decorazioni!
E il fatto che siano “riciclose” le rende ancora più belle.
Complimenti e grazie per tutorial e schemi.
