Mermaids, unicorns, rainbows… these protagonists of fun fantasy are all the rage these days, especially if they have glitter and shine! So when asked for a guest post for the website Fleece Fun, I decided to share my FREE doll mermaid costume sewing pattern that I’ve been using for years, but add a little sparkle and other elements of interest to it.
The Cucicucicoo free doll mermaid costume sewing pattern features an elastic waist, two fin shapes, and the cutest little shell bra ever, that just makes the whole costume ever so more adorable!
The red tail above is sewn from fleece, which is the easiest fabric to use for this project. An extra bonus is that you can sew scallops along the body, which show up nicely on the puffy fabric. The blue tail above is sewn from shiny velour and a costume fabric with faux sequins (which is easier to sew than real sequins). These fabrics fray, so the instructions are slightly different in order to enclose them.
These costumes fit classic 18 inch dolls perfectly, but the sizing is quite flexible, and they will also fit slightly larger or smaller dolls, as well. This makes these DIY mermaid costumes a great gift because the fit is so flexible!
Which do you like more?
These tails are SO FAST to sew up, so they’re a perfect last minute gift for your favorite girly girl who loves a little sparkle! And if that girl wants a bit of mermaid fun, too, why not make her a matching human-sized mermaid tail?!
My “Sea Snuggler” Mermaid Tail Blanket pattern is perfect for both kids and adults, with 16 sizes, and features the same two fin shapes as the doll version, but is also fully reversible and gives the option of an elastic waistband or a looser blanket-style waistband. Click here to get the Sea Snuggler sewing pattern!
If you’ve got a bit of extra fleece left over, you can also whip up a super easy fabric doll diaper with my FREE pattern!
So, head on over to Fleece Fun for my free doll mermaid costume sewing pattern and tutorial! Don’t forget to let me know how you like it!

Hi, I’ve sent you a private email with information on how to get the free pattern. If you have any questions, please respond via email so that we don’t have to share private information publicly! 🙂
These are so adorable. Thanks for sharing at the Snickerdoodle Create Bake Make Party.
Thanks, Debra! I have to admit, I myself enjoy playing with dolls when there are outfits like this! Haha!
Cannot found the free pattern
Hi Aldren, it’s not on my website because I made this project as a guest post on another website. You have to click the link to go to Fleece Fun (https://www.fleecefun.com/diy-18-inch-doll-mermaid-costume-pattern/) and at the bottom of that post you can insert your information to receive it. Happy sewing!
I have repeatedly filled out the info at the end of your tutorial-on Fleece-fun, but have been unable to get the pattern from them. I do love your pattern and am just beginning to outfit an 18″ doll with all the ‘outfits’ she will need! Your stuff is GORGEOUS!! Thanks in advance for all your help!
Thanks so much, Susie! I just responded to you with a private email.
