I did it! Today is the last day of week four, and therefore the entire month, of Me-Made-May 2014 and I successfully followed through with my pledge to at least one garment that I’ve made, refashioned or embellished each day of this month. You can see my first week here, my second week here, and my third week here.
This year I upped my pledge, deciding to wear at least one garment each day without giving myself the opportunity to fall back on just popping on an accessory like I did last year. This made it considerably more effort on my part and the weather didn’t help me either, being cool and rainy most of the month, and not having many me-made garments for that type of weather. I was also busier with about a million other things and projects going on and I honestly didn’t always want to think so hard about what I was going to wear that day.
However, that made this sort of experience even more of an eye-opener. The point of this challenge is to not only wear what you create yourself with pride, but also to be more aware of what you wear and where your clothing comes from. I like to think that I have a good amount of me-made clothing and accessories that I use regularly, but this experience really made me realize just how many clothes I still have that come from factories in third-world countries. This was very thought-provoking and really helped urge me on my quest to continue to make my own clothes or buy only second-hand. (I made this pledge to myself a year or so ago, and only buy new shoes, socks, underwear and jackets. However I hope to soon shorten that list to make some of those on my own, too!)

When posing for this picture, I hadn’t considered that the balloon sword would’ve looked a bit on the phallic side.

This was a very stressful day. You might’ve caught my freaked out post on Facebook about my website not showing up. What I didn’t share publicly was that I wasn’t able to access the dashboard or hosting panel to make any changes, either. After hours of trying different things, live chats with my hosting company and help from a computer tech friend, I managed to get everything visible again. So it wasn’t until after midnight that I realized that I hadn’t gotten anyone to take my picture that day.

I still had some residual stress left over from the day before and was starting to honestly feel pretty burnt out with this challenge. Hence another day that I forgot about my picture until it was late. (These solar-powered lights we’d gotten from Ikea a couple of days earlier work great, by the way!)

What a fun challenge! Congrats on achieving your goal.
Thanks, Amy! It was fun and interesting!
Lisa your outfits are wonderful! You looked great all challenge long and I’m so pleased you took part again and amped up your pledge. I think it’s great that your month was busy, because as you say, dressing me-made and second-hand should be a way of life, not just when we’ve got time for it! xxx
Yes, I totally agree, that dressing me-made and second-hand should just part of everyday life, the rule, not the exception! That’s when you start really making your bit of difference in the world! Thanks for stopping by, Zoe!
