Spring is starting to make itself felt, and this means that I’m thoroughly enjoying the warm sun and amazingly fragrant budding flowers. It also means that I’m getting ready for Me-Made-May ’14. Oh yes! This will be my second time participating in the challenge to wear my own handmade clothing. Last year I challenged myself to wear “at least one handmade/refashioned/self-embellished garment or accessory each day for the duration of May 2013.” I made it through the month without any real problems (except for the days my son was sick and was throwing up on me) however I did notice that I sometimes fell back on wearing just a me-made accessory. So I decided to take it up just a tiny bit this year. Here’s my official pledge:
I, Lisa of Cucicucicoo, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May ’14. I endeavour to wear at least one me-made/refashioned/knit article of clothing each day for the duration of May 2014.
It’s not much different from my 2013 pledge. All that’s missing from my new pledge is the word “accessory.” Sure, I will definitely wear me-made accessories, but I will do my best to wear them with me-made clothing each day. As long as I’ve done something to the clothing, it’s legit. So if it’s been sewn from scratch, refashioned or just embellished, it’s good. Other techniques are allowed, too, such as knit and crochet.
Do you sometimes feel funny wearing your own creations in public? Or is it just easier for you to wear your store-bought clothing? Or would you like to have a new experience, really thinking about what you wear each day? Then sign up with me! There are no rules about what your pledge should be. Some people pledge to wear one me-made garment per week. Others pledge to wear only me-mades all month long. If you’re really new, you could even pledge to wear one me-made just once the entire month. Why not? The point is not to stress out, panic sew or compare yourself to others (although it’s very inspiring to see what other participants wear) but to push yourself to make use of your amazing creations! If you’re interested, you can sign up here. In the meantime, I’m hoping to get a couple more me-mades ready. I will, like last year, take a picture every day and post them once a week. I’m really looking forward to it and this year I actually have an extra challenge: I will be participating in a wedding during the month of May, so I will need to make me-made wedding gear! What fun!
*Edit* Here are the posts showing what I wore over the month:
